Driver seriously injured in Schuylkill County crash

A Northumberland County driver was seriously injured in a one-vehicle crash in Schuylkill County in which alcohol may have played a role.

State police at Frackville said the accident occurred at 9:14 p.m. on Friday, May 2, along Route 924 (Ringtown Boulevard), in West Mahanoy Township.Troopers said Mark Sakalosky, 47, of Shamokin, was driving a 1997 Ford Ranger pickup southbound when, for unknown reasons, his vehicle drifted onto the shoulder.Sakalosky applied his brakes hard, causing the truck to skid along the shoulder for about 120 feet and into a curve.The truck then struck an embankment with its front right corner, flipped onto the driver's side, and then slid south on its side for an additional 30 feet.Sakalosky was trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by rescue personnel. He was then flown by helicopter to the Geisinger Medical Center, Danville, with what troopers said were major injuries. Damages were severe to the truck.Troopers added that indicators were that alcohol was present and a driving under the influence charge is pending.
