Shooting victim taken to hospital after West Penn crash

West Penn Township police are investigating an incident which was first reported as a crash, but when police arrived on scene they found a gunshot victim.

Just before 10 p.m. emergency personnel were dispatched to Apple Jack Lane at the intersection with Roads End Road for an accident.

A revised dispatch reported the victim of the accident to have a gunshot wound to the back and that the scene was unsecured. Police from West Penn township raced to the scene along with Tamaqua and Summit Hill.

The young woman was treated at the scene by members of the Tamaqua ambulance and Lehighton paramedics before being flown to St. Luke's Hospital Trauma Center in Bethlehem by Penn Star helicopter.

The female was traveling south on West Mountaintop Road in Summit Hill and as she entered West Penn Township when her car left the roadway on the right berm entering a corn field where it traveled several hundred feet before coming to rest.

It appeared she made her way about a hundred yards to 85 Roads End road where she was found lying in the roadway.
