Palmerton boosters explore sports practice options
Members of the Palmerton Youth Football Booster Club are exploring options for football and cheerleading practices this upcoming season.
They attended the Lower Towamensing Township supervisors meeting Tuesday night and asked if the club could use Stoney Ridge Park for practices.
Brent Green, chairman of the supervisors, said they might want to consider the large grassy field off Wintergreen Road. The area used to be a garbage dump, but has since been capped, covered with top soil, and planted with grass. The club members were willing to go out and take a look at it.
Kristy Gable, who spoke on behalf of the club, said they plan to have all of the games away, but they just want to have a place for the children to practice. They are hoping to begin practices on Aug. 3.
“Without having someplace to practice, they’re not going to have a season and they are already going stir crazy from being stuck in the house for the most part since March.”
Green told the club that if they decide to use a township field, then they would need to sign an indemnification that includes a release, and provide a certificate of insurance.
The township is willing to provide a field for free, as long as the club helps with the maintenance while they are using it.
The booster club also asked if they could place a portable toilet at the field. They would make the arrangements for the placement and would cover the expense.
Supervisors Green and Jay Mullikin were fine with that proposal. Supervisor Connie Brown was absent from the meeting.
Mullikin and Green voted to approve the club’s use of a township field on the condition of the required paperwork being submitted.
Gable said the booster club is meeting this week to decide if they will use one of the township’s fields and which one.
