Schuylkill standoff ends peacefully

A five hour standoff in Schuylkill County ended peacefully Wednesday when the man surrendered to police.

State police at Frackville said the standoff occurred at a residence a 860 Fountain St., in Butler Township, outside Ashland.

According to troopers at 7:26 a.m. they were dispatched to the home for the report of a man throwing objects from a second-story window onto Route 61.

Troopers said the suspect, John S. Miller, 55, was at a second-floor window with a semi-automatic pistol.

As troopers retreated to safety, Miller threw glass jars at them almost hitting them.

Negotiations then began with Miller.

The state police special response team was activated and responded to the scene. Miller surrendered about 1:15 p.m. He came out of the house and was immediately taken into custody. He was transported to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

Troopers charged Miller with two counts of terroristic threats and one count each of recklessly endangering another person, simple assault and propulsion of missiles into an occupied vehicle or onto a roadway.

Route 61 was shutdown during the incident and reopened after Miller was in custody. No injuries were reported.
