A Monroe County inmate has been charged with assaulting a corrections officer on May 30.
According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by the Monroe County District Attorney’s office, Jose Miguel Maldonado assaulted a corrections officer, whose name was not released, following a verbal confrontation.
The corrections officer reported to the kitchen staff at the facility that Maldonado was to be removed from the list of inmates who observe Ramadan after eating a meal during lunch hours. This is a violation of the facility’s Ramadan accommodations.
At 1:25 p.m. while his cellmate was being returned to his cell, Maldonado forced his way out of his cell and attacked the corrections officer.
The affidavit stated that Maldonado struck the officer repeatedly in the head and face and once the officer fell to the ground, Maldonado continued the assault on the officer until he was restrained by a number of other corrections officers.
The corrections officer whom Maldonado assaulted suffered multiple broken bones, lacerations and contusions on his head and face resulting in at least six fractures to his nose and a fracture to the orbital socket.
Maldonado was charged with three felonies on June 4. The charges include one charge of assault by a prisoner, one charge of aggravated assault with indifference to value of life, and one charge of assault resulting in serious injury to protected, which refers to a corrections officer while performing his duty.
Maldonado was arraigned by video before District Justice C. Daniel Higgins Jr. A preliminary hearing is set for 1 p.m. June 15
