A look back: July 2, 1969

“Lehigh Gorge State Park” is the name given by the State Geographic Board to the proposed 6,900-acre project planned for the Lehigh River north of Jim Thorpe in Carbon and Luzerne counties.

The state planning board recently gave approval of the $1 million project which comes under Project 70 and was designed by the Department of Forests and Waters.

The area includes about 30 miles of the river and gorge area, extending from a point north of White Haven southward to Jim Thorpe, and will be preserved to protect the scenic area and enhance recreational facilities for camping, hiking, biking, boating, fishing, picnicking and hunting in the region.
