Buttercream blooms in Tamaqua
Delicious flowers were blooming in Tamaqua recently.
Locals with an interest in learning how to decorate cakes gathered at the Tamaqua Community Art Center earlier this month for a lesson in creating flowers to bloom on their homemade cakes. The class was taught by Aimee Dotson, owner of Pamkakes in Tamaqua.
Attendees received a hands-on demonstration on how to create blossoming flowers made from buttercream icing.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to reach out to even more people,” said Dotson.
The class marked her first time instructing at the Tamaqua Community Art Center.
Although Pamkakes is located nearby on Broad Street in Tamaqua, hosting the event through the art center allows those who might not have attended other classes in the past to try something new.
Judy Llewellyn and Linda Shoup of New Ringgold decided to attend the class after learning about it through an advertisement for the art center.
The duo said it looked like a fun time.
Both Llewellyn and Shoup were excited to visit since neither of them had been to the art center before.
Dotson became the owner of Pamkakes nearly four years ago after working at the bakery for three years.
“When the previous owner decided to step down, I felt like buying the shop was only natural,” she said.
Her instructional classes started out as cake decorating parties for children, but after popular demand, classes became available for bakers of all ages.
Usually Dotson teaches at the shop, but after receiving requests to bring her talents to the art center, she decided to branch out.
The class was centered on teaching attendees how to make four different types of flowers by using five different techniques.
After several practice tries, class members were able to decorate their cake according to their own desire.
Although each cake was decorated with the same techniques, they all had a unique style.
Dotson will be teaching another class at the art center, which is located at 125 Pine St. in Tamaqua, at 6 p.m. Aug. 16.
Students will learn how to decorate a cake with buttercream sunflowers.
