Deer cause of Schuylkill crash

Deer crossing Schuylkill County roads were the cause of two accidents, state police at Frackville reported.

Troopers said Gregory S. Keller, 17, of Barnesville, was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Cavalier eastbound on SR54 in the village of Wiggans, Mahanoy Township, about 7:11 p.m. on Nov. 5 when a deer entered the road in front of him.Keller attempted to avoid the animal which caused him to lose control. The car then struck the guide rail on the opposite side of the road.Keller and passengers Victoria L. Ixim, 14, Larry M. Purcell III, 17, Tori R. Sallaway, 15, and Kristina M. St. Peter, 15, all of Mahanoy City, were all not injured. The car had to be towed from the scene.Troopers said Keller was cited for a junior driver's license violation.The second accident involving a deer occurred about 9:08 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, along Grier Avenue (SR1012), in Delano Township. Troopers said Ryan L. Genery, 24, of Barnesville, was driving a 2008 Kia Spectra northbound when a deer entered the road in front of him. Genery swerved his vehicle to avoid the animal and lost control.The Kia spun counter-clockwise and struck an embankment on the left side of the road head-on. After impact the Kia continued to spin counter-clockwise and came to final rest facing east in the southbound lane.Genery was not injured.
