Weatherly pushes off Polar Plunge because of frigid temperatures

Weatherly’s first Polar Plunge has been pushed off to February due to frigid weather predictions.

While some might call the conditions perfect for the event, Mayor Tom Connors says that the rescheduling is intended to prevent anyone from suffering serious consequences.

“The borough manager and I made the decision to postpone the Polar Plunge, mainly because it’s going to be so cold,” Connors said.

Temperatures on Monday are expected to range from a high of 16 degrees to a low of 8 degrees, with AccuWeather calling for “windy and frigid” conditions.

Connors mentioned that he noticed similar events in New Jersey were canceled due to the bone-chilling weather, and agreed that safety was a top concern. When he brought the matter up to his wife, the resident Polar Plunge expert, she agreed that rescheduling was in the best interest of the Plungers.

Connors is hoping that by Feb. 3, temperatures at the Eurana Park pool will have risen to a more hospitable level. Many Plungers who were set to jump in on Monday have already pledged to join the effort in February.

Each $20 entry fee will be donated to the American Cancer Society’s Weatherly Pride Relay for Life team and the Weatherly Winter Recreation Program. Spectators will be able to vote for their favorite plunger with a $1 contribution.

“I’m sure we’re going to have a lot of fun, and we’re hoping to make it a yearly event,” Connors said.
