State police report weekend crashes

A Kunkletown man was charged with reckless driving in a hit-and-run crash Saturday in Franklin Township.

State police at Lehighton said Gerard G. Nieroda, 22, was northbound on Interchange Road, near the intersection with Route 248, when his 2000 Pontiac Sunfire hit the back of a 2013 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Glenn T. Silfies, 53, of Palmerton, just before 4:30 p.m.Silfies' vehicle, police said, was stopped due to traffic.Nieroda continued to push the Cruze from behind, nearly striking Silfies, who got out of his vehicle to confront him.Police said Nieroda crossed into the southbound lane and nearly struck oncoming traffic as he fled the scene.Nieroda was later located at his residence and under the influence of a controlled substance, according to police. He refused a blood test. Two drivers were uninjured following a crash on an icy Interchange Road late Saturday in Towamensing Township.Amy E. Rice, 23, of Philadelphia, lost control of her 2003 Ford Focus while southbound near the Stagecoach Road intersection around 11:15 p.m.Her vehicle crossed the double yellow line and hit a 2001 Honda CRV, driven by Paulette M. Hopkins, 61, of Kresgeville.State police at Lehighton said no citations would be filed. A Kunkletown man was transported to Palmerton Hospital after a crash Saturday in Monroe County.James D. Rabenold, 21, was going about 30 mph when his 1999 Honda Accord slid off an icy Lower Smith Gap Road in Eldred Township just before 8 p.m., according to state police at Lehighton.The vehicle struck a tree about one mile west of the road's intersection with Schaffer Road.Rabenold said he had neck pain and was transported from the scene by West End EMS. A Jim Thorpe teen will be cited in a head-on crash that injured another driver just before 3 p.m. Saturday on Maury Road in Penn Forest Township.Stephanie Sehenuk, 18, was southbound, near the Long Run Road intersection, when her 1996 Ford Explorer crossed the center line and hit a 2012 Toyota Tacoma, driven by David K. Hauss, 50, of Holland, Pa.State police at Lehighton listed Hauss' injury as minor. He was not transported from the scene. An icy road contributed to a one-vehicle crash in Schuylkill County on Sunday morning, according to state police at Frackville.Brandon L. Oakill, 29, of Pottsville, was eastbound on High Road just before 6:30 a.m., when his 2006 Dodge Ram 1500 slid through the westbound land and struck a utility pole, shearing off the vehicle's front tire on the passenger side.The truck went down a 15-foot embankment, landing against trees and shrubbery.Police said Oakill was not injured and will not be cited for the crash.
