Rare coins and currency on display at Lehigh Valley museum

For one day only, the public can meet expert numismatists, view rare coins and currency, and buy and sell coins as they learn about the history of money, coins and coin collecting.

The Coin Show will convene at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum, 432 W. Walnut St. in Allentown.

There will be a free giveaway of coins for children in attendance. Verbal appraisals will be available all day. Admission to the event is free.

“This is our best history,” said Joseph Garrera, executive director of the museum.

“Currency represents our nation’s growth and how it has grappled with the financial challenges. Coins and currency tell the story of our local and national history.”

Along with guest curator Stephen Gehringer, expert numismatists will be exhibiting all day, with coins bought and sold dealers from across the country.

Free verbal appraisals will be available, and heritage museum visitors can even learn about coin collecting and grading from national experts. Lectures and films on coins and collecting will continue throughout the Coin Show.

“This is a unique opportunity to see such an exceptional collection of extraordinarily rare coins and currency exhibited in one place,” said Gehringer.

Gehringer said that the Coin Show is especially designed to involve and excite young coin collectors.

The Lehigh Valley Heritage Museum is a 30,000-square-foot teaching institution that attracts a diverse audience.

Its collections of historical Americana include over 30,000 three-dimensional objects, 3.5 million documents and more than 120,000 vintage photographs.
