The Pleasant Valley School Board on Thursday night issued a statement about the charges against a district employee.

Pleasant Valley School District Director of Support Services Joshua Krebs was charged on Dec. 20 with four felony counts of intercepting communications, three counts of disclose of intercepted communications and one count of use of intercepted communications and was arraigned this week.

“The Pleasant Valley School Board is aware of Tuesday’s arraignment of a district employee. We understand the seriousness of the charges as well as the presumption of innocence,” school board President Len Peeters said Thursday.

The charges stem from an incident in April 2016 when Krebs and district technology coordinator, Alex Sterenchock installed video cameras with sound enabled in a teachers break room at Pleasant Valley Elementary School to try to catch a school custodian who they suspected was taking long breaks while on duty.

The camera was discovered and removed, but the fallout continues.

A grand jury was convened in the summer and recommended charges against both Krebs and Sterenchock. Only Krebs has been charged to date.

Krebs was arraigned Tuesday before District Justice C. Daniel Higgins in Stroud Township. District Justice Colleen Mancuso, who was involved in the initial arrest, has recused herself from the matter.

Krebs’ preliminary hearing is set for Jan. 26. Krebs remains on the job at this time.

The district has hired the Levin Legal Groups’ Michael Levin to represent the district in this matter. Levin has been tasked with conducting an internal investigation into the matter. Krebs has retained Brian Jordan as his legal counsel.

Peeters also said, “The administration has been and will continue to be in contact with counsel Michael Levin, who specializes in school law.”

Peeters said Levin is assisting the administration in an internal investigation while the criminal process continues.

“Upon Mr. Levin’s advice, we will not be taking any questions tonight regarding this matter,” Peeters said. “The Pleasant Valley School Board will continue to cooperate with law enforcement and allow the legal process to run its course.”
