More than 370 Scouts came out for an afternoon of some frigid March fun at Blue Mountain Ski Area Saturday.
Troops came from Parkland, Whitehall, Northampton, Northwestern-Lehigh, Lehighton, Palmerton, Jim Thorpe, Catasauqua, and Northern Lehigh school districts. The mountain crew groomed the snow tube track for the troops to have the best chance at winning the competition. The rules of the contest were for teams to consist of two to four Scouts per box. All crafts had to be built of solely cardboard, tape, string, glue and paper. Scouts were also able to decorate their sleds with paint of any of other type of decorations to make them stand out.The tape was used by Scouts on the bottom of their sleds to help it get down the slope more easily.Scouts could be disqualified for any use of lubricant on their sleds. The craft also could not be completely enclosed. The older Scouts (Boys 11-17) and Venture Units (Co-Ed 14-20) took on the hill first at a chilly 9:30 a.m. start. The longest run in this group was Troop 20 of Palmerton followed by Troop 55 of Washington Crossing Council.Troop 25 of Palmer Township won the most Scout Spirit award and Troop 261 of Breinigsville won the best design category. The Cub Scout Packs (Boys 6-10) were up next. The longest run in this group was by Pack 588 of New Tripoli followed by Pack 61 of Breinigsville. The Most Scout Spirit Award was given to Pack 209 of Palmerton and the Best Design Award was given to Pack 145 of Lehighton.Scouts marketing manager Alista Blose said the event was a huge success and "will definitely be held again next year."
