3 killed, teen hurt in alcohol-related crash near Tamaqua

Three people were killed and one was seriously injured in a two-vehicle crash at 9:29 p.m. Tuesday along Route 209 at Mining Road in Walker Township. The site of the crash is west of Tamaqua.

State police at Frackville identified Zachary Kabana, 24, of Tamaqua; Jeremy Behler, 24, of Tuscarora; and Kylee Mullen, 23, of Lehighton as the deceased. The vehicles involved were identified as a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 truck and a 1992 Volkswagen sedan.

Police said Kabana was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

According to troopers, the Dodge Ram, driven by Kabana, was being operated northbound on Mining Road while the Volkswagen was northbound on Route 209. Police say Kabana, who was driving with a suspended license, attempted to make a left turn onto 209.

The driver of the Volkswagen, Behler, attempted to avoid a collision by driving into the oncoming lane of travel. The collision between the two vehicles took place in the southbound lane of Route 209, troopers said.

The front of the Volkswagen struck the driver’s side door of the Dodge. After impact, the Dodge struck several trees along the berm and came to final rest on its passenger side in a wooded area behind the guide rail.

The Volkswagen continued north, spun around in a counterclockwise direction, then traveled about 30 feet, with the passenger side striking the guide rail on the lefthand side of the road. The Volkswagen came to final rest upon striking the guide rail.

Police said the Ram was going 25 mph and the Volkswagen was going 70 mph.

Kabana, Behler and Mullen, a passenger in the Volkswagen, were pronounced dead at the scene.

A 17-year-old Tamaqua female, who was a passenger in the truck, was flown from the scene by medical helicopter to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest. The teen had to be extricated from the vehicle.

The police report indicates Kabana made an improper and careless turn, and improper entrance to the highway.

A state police forensics and crash reconstruction team was called to the scene.
