Lack of races reflected in low turnout

A lack of county races was reflected in the very low voter turnout on Tuesday in Schuylkill County.

Just over 21 percent of eligible voters cast ballots in the primary.There were only two county offices up for election - sheriff and district attorney.Incumbent Democratic Sheriff Joseph G. Groody got 6,217 unopposed votes. There was no Republican candidate but there were 1,340 write-in votes. A person needs a minimum of 100 write-in votes to get a county office nomination.Incumbent Republican District Attorney Christine A. Holman got 8,024 unopposed votes. Democrat Michael A. O'Pake, also unopposed, got 6,552 votes. The two will square off in the fall.District judgesFour county district judges were seeking re-election to new six-year terms. None were opposed and the four cross-filed.The vote totals were:Stephen J. Bayer, covers the Tamaqua area, 564 Democratic votes; 1,165 RepublicanJames R. Ferrier, Orwigsburg-West Penn Township area, 986 Democratic; 2,438 Republican.Jimmy Reiley, most of Pottsville area, 925; Democratic; 633 Republican.Christina E. Hale, Frackville area, 915 Democratic; 1,341 Republican.Statewide resultsThe only statewide races were for seats on the three state courts: Supreme, Superior and Commonwealth.For Supreme Court, the state's highest court, there is one opening.Both parties have one candidate. Sallie Mundy got 7,996 GOP votes while Dwayne Woodruff got 5,598 Democratic tallies. The two will face off in the fall. Mundy is trying to retain a seat she was appointed to last year. Woodruff is an Allegheny judge and a former player for the Pittsburgh Steelers.There are four seats up for election for the Superior Court.The Democrats had five candidates. The vote totals were Maria McLaughlin, 4,513; Carolyn H. Nichols, 4,236; Debbie Kunselman, 4,117; Geoff Moulton, 3,522; and Bill Caye, 2,678. Statewide Philadelphia judges Nicholas and McLaughlin and Beaver county judge Kunselman won along with present Superior Court Judge Moulton, who is seeking retention.On the GOP side, the vote totals were Craig Stedman, 6,749; Emil Giordano, 5,948; Mary Murray, 5,207; Wade A. Kagarise, 4,707; and Paula A. Patrick, 3,847. Statewide Blair County Judge Kagarise, Lancaster County District Attorney Stedman, Northampton County Judge Giordano and District Judge Murray of Allegheny County were the winners.Commonwealth Court has two positions open.On the Democratic side the vote totals were: Joe Cosgrove, 2,965; Todd Eagen, 2,427; Irene M. Clark, 1,801; Ellen Ceisler, 1,735; Timothy Barry, 1,271; and Bryan Barbin, 841. Statewide Philadelphia Judge Ceisler and Pittsburgh lawyer Clark won the nods.On the GOP side only two candidates were listed. Delaware County Judge Christine F. Cannon got 6,311 and Pittsburgh lawyer Paul Lalley 6,303.
