Heavy rain played a part in a structure fire in Tamaqua on Tuesday evening.
After rain flooded an enclosed porch at 446 E. Broad St., the residents were conducting cleanup operations and placed a blower on the porch to help the drying process.
According to Tamaqua fire Chief James R. Connely, an electrical malfunction resulted in smoke and flames.
The homeowners quickly used a fire extinguisher and a neighbor’s garden hose to keep the flames from spreading until firefighters arrived.
Firefighters were dispatched at 7:52 p.m. and the fire was declared out at 8:15 p.m. Emergency personnel cleared the scene at 8:50 p.m., opening Broad Street to traffic.
Responding were all four of Tamaqua’s fire companies, Tamaqua Police, Tamaqua Rescue Squad and the Tamaqua Community Ambulance.
Connely declared the fire accidental in nature.
The porch sustained fire and smoke damage, while the interior of the home sustained only smoke damage. The family was allowed to reoccupy the home when the scene was cleared.
No injuries were reported and the fire chief says the home is insured.
