Skeletal remains found Saturday evening in Coaldale belong to Corey Samuels, state police at Frackville reported Sunday.
Samuels, 24, who was a Coaldale resident, had been missing since January.According to police, two people walking near East Miner Street in the western end of the borough discovered the remains on Saturday. Some articles of clothing were also recovered at the site.The Schuylkill County Coroner's office and a forensic anthropological team assisted with the investigation.In January, volunteers and firefighters accompanied by search dogs, scoured the wooded, mountainous terrain of the property owned by BET Lehigh Real Estate, land that was formerly owned and mined by Lehigh Coal and Navigation, for several days looking for Samuels. Samuels' family reported he had been missing since Jan. 20.The property, which stretches through Coaldale, Summit Hill and Lansford, can be treacherous, Coaldale Police Sgt. Keith Krapf said.Police, at the time, said he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder due to his time in the military. Samuels left the U.S. Marine Corps in 2012.A cause of death has yet to be determined.When he went missing, Krapf said, "This is not the first time he's taken off for periods of time, but this is the first it's been this long."Krapf had said Samuels was last seen in the woods with friends near Summit Hill.According to his Facebook profile at the time he went missing, Samuels' girlfriend was Tara Corin Kurtz since Aug. 15, 2013. The profile also says he graduated from William Allen High School in Allentown in 2008, and joined the U.S. Marines shortly thereafter.
