A total of nine defendants charged with driving under the influence (DUI), entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Thursday.

Judge Steven R. Serfass accepted the pleas from the following.Tyler C. Klotz, 29, of Lehighton, entered pleas in two pending cases. He was arrested on Oct. 28, 2012, by Lehighton police along First St. Given a test the result was .11BAC.He was arrested on Feb. 24 by Lehighton police along Bridge St. In that arrest he refused a blood test and will lose his license for a year for the refusal.Serfass deferred sentencing.Brandyn Lee Gatens, 21, of Lehighton, was arrested on Jan. 25 by Lehighton police. He also pleaded to fleeing and eluding and driving under suspension-DUI related. Police first spotted him along Bridge St. driving erratically. They attempted to stop him but he fled but was eventually apprehended.On the driving under suspension charge he was sentenced to serve 90 days in jail and pay a fine of $1,000, plus another year suspension. On the DUI charge he was sentenced to serve 90 days to six months in jail, a fine of $750, one year license suspension, get a drug and alcohol (D&A) evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance imposed on D&A use, and render 25 hours of community service. The jail terms run consecutively.On the fleeing charge he was placed on probation for 18 months consecutive to the other counts and render 75 hours of community service for a total of 100 hours.The terms run consecutive to a probation violation term he is currently serving. He was granted work release privileges.Steven Matthew Craigie, 29, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on Feb. 24 along Mauch Chunk St., by Mahoning Township police. Given a test, the result was .18BAC. He also pleaded to fleeing and eluding as when officers initially attempted to stop him for speeding, 75 miles-per-hour in a 35 zone, he fled and the chase continued into Jim Thorpe. He eventually stopped his vehicle but fled on foot but was later apprehended.Serfass deferred sentencing.Jennifer Liat Hughart, 46, of Kunkletown, was arrested on Nov. 14, 2012, by state police at Lehighton, along Lower Smith Gap Road in Lower Towamensing Township. Given a test, the result was .19BAC.Hughart is currently in the county prison on a probation violation that runs to July 6.Serfass sentenced her to serve five days to six months in jail, a fine of $300, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service. The jail term runs concurrent with the probation sentence. She was granted work release privileges.David Griffith, 63, of Lehighton, was arrested on Dec. 21, 2012, along SR895 in East Penn Township by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result was .27BAC.A first offender, he was placed on probation for six months and ordered to pay a fine of $300, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.Ryan Rymdeko, 24, of Scranton, and formerly of Albrightsville, was arrested on April 4, 2011, along Broadway by Jim Thorpe police. Given a test, the result was .17BAC.He was previously placed in the county's Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition (ARD) probation program for first time offenders but was revoked from it for not completing all conditions.He was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.He will begin the jail term at 9 a.m. on May 24.Shanea Lee Mertz, 20, of Jim Thorpe, was arrested on July 24, 2011, along SR903 in Penn Forest Township, by state police at Lehighton, after being involved in an accident. Given a test, the result was .16BAC.Serfass sentenced her to serve 48 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $500, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.She will begin the jail term on May 24 at 9 a.m.Sherry Patricia Roberts, 44, of Bath, was arrested on June 29, 2012, along Forest Inn Road, in Lower Towamensing Township, by state police at Lehighton, after being involved in a crash. Given a test, the result was .17BAC.She was sentenced to serve 48 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $500, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.She will begin the jail term at 7 a.m. on May 30.David Allen Smith, 55, of Lehighton, was arrested on April 9, 2011, along SR209, in Lehighton, by state police at Lehighton. Given a test, the result was .13BAC, plus the presence of a controlled substance.He also pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia for an incident on July 15, 2012, in the 700 block of N. First St., where Mahoning Township police found him staggering in and out of traffic.On the DUI count Serfass sentenced him to serve 30 days to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000, one year license suspension, get a D&A evaluation, and render 25 hours of community service.On the possession count he was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the DUI charge, and render an additional 100 hours of community service. On two summary offenses he was fined a total of $35 and costs.He will serve the jail term on consecutive weekends beginning at 6 p.m. on May 24.Each defendant must also pay court costs, which average about $1,000, and pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
