Oil leak costs $46K Panther Valley expects costs to rise from ruptured storage tank

So far the clean-up costs for an oil spill July 27 at the Panther Valley Middle School amounts to $46,125.

But the cost is expected to go a lot higher. The Panther Valley School Board on Thursday voted to pay the firm of Datom Products Inc.of Dunmore, that amount for work done from July 27 to Aug. 5 regarding the oil leak cleanup.John Williams, chairman of the building and grounds committee for the school board, said all the oil that didn't spill was pumped out of the leaking tank. The leak occurred as a result of a crack, measuring about 28 inches in length, at the bottom of a seven-year-old oil tank.Williams said additional work is being done to determine where the leaking fuel traveled underground. The tank is located next to the administrative office at the Middle School.Because the tank has been emptied, the leak will not have any impact on the opening of schools on Aug. 24.The board met in executive session for 90 minutes before its public meeting on Thursday, and Williams said much of that executive session was spent discussing the leak.Because there is potential for litigation, no other information was released about the executive session. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection was notified at 8 a.m. on July 27 of the spill from a 10,000-gallon underground double-walled tank.Approximately 5,000 gallons of heating oil was released from the tank, according to the DEP, seeping into the drain system at the bottom of the bank and behind the high school. The tank is the same one that had a ruptured line in 2007 after someone drilled through the line causing 6,000 gallons to spill at that time. There are monitoring wells located on the school property as a result of the 2007 release.
