California couple charged in '02 murder of Pa. man

STROUDSBURG - A California man and woman have been charged with the killing and dismemberment of a northeastern Pennsylvania man more than 13 years ago.

State police in Fern Ridge charged James Britton Jr., 35, and Stacy Britton, 46, of Twentynine Palms, California, in the July 2002 murder of Robert Roudebush, 46, of Edwardsville.Troopers said the remains of Roudebush were found in 2002 inside two burn barrels off North Road in Jackson Township.The remains were not identified until November 2003.During the course of the investigation troopers, said the two suspects provided false information in order to divert suspicion away from them.Recent developments have led investigators to determine that the victim was murdered by the two suspects.The murder occurred inside a residence in Wilkes-Barre, after which he was dismembered and transported to Monroe County,where the body parts were found. Police say the two killed Roudebush because they thought he had stolen drugs and money.Both defendants face charges of criminal homicide, tampering or fabricating physical evidence, abuse of a corpse, perjury, false swearing and hindering prosecution by concealing or destroying evidence.The charges were filed in the office of District Judge Colleen Mancuso of Brodheadsville.Anyone who may have additional information that would assist in the investigation is asked to call Troop N headquarters at 570-459-3890.Troopers said detectives from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Homicide Unit, California, assisted in the investigation.Court documents indicate the suspects will be represented by the county public defender's office.- From staff and wire reports
