A $5 theft is costly mistake for Monroe County woman

The theft of $5 worth of candy from a Carbon County store became a very costly mistake for a Monroe County woman.

Angela Jean Leap, 57, of Saylorsburg, pleaded guilty on Thursday before Judge Steven R. Serfass to one count of retail theft for an incident on Dec. 4at the Country Junction store along Route 209 in Towamensing Township.State police at Lehighton responded to the theft call and learned that Leap took some candy bars and did not pay for them. The $5 worth of candy bars has cost Leap court costs and more. Since Leap has a prior conviction for retail theft, the new one is now rated a felony three, meaning the court could impose a prison term.Serfass placed her on probation for 24 months and ordered she must pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation, pay about $1,000 in court costs, make restitution of the $5 to the store, supply a DNA sample and stay out of Country Junction for the probation period.
