Brodheadsville Eagle Scout candidate plans family fun day

Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church in Brodheadsville will be the site of a family fun day from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, thanks to the work of a local Boy Scout.

August "Gus" Randazzo, 16, of Kresgeville, has organized the event as part of a project to earn the rank of Eagle Scout. Randazzo is a member of Troop 109 in Saylorsburg. The event's focus is to promote community awareness of Garden of Giving, a nonprofit organization in Saylorsburg that cultivates high-yield produce and provides fresh eggs for local food banks in Monroe County. The event will feature crafting, pony rides, a ladybug release and showcase antique farm equipment, as well as music, face painting and food.Free to the public, the day will also include information, displays and activities related to home vegetable gardening and agriculture supplied by groups such as the Monroe County Master Gardeners, 4-H, Monroe County Conservation District, and the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. The church will also hold a yard sale during the event.Randazzo has been organizing the event for the past four months. He chose an event to help educate the community on Garden of Giving rather than a construction project after volunteering for the group for the last two years.Randazzo is passionate about agriculture and works with the Pennsylvania Association of Sustainable Agriculture and Backyard Fruit Growers.Randazzo also plants heirloom fruits and vegetables, growing 40 varieties of heirloom tomatoes last year.In order to qualify as a project for Scouting, Randazzo had to have his event approved by the Eagle Board of Review.Once accepted, Randazzo had to organize volunteers, generate publicity, gather materials such as posters, tents, bins, seeds and other supplies, and raise money for the event.Randazzo sold multiple cases of Gertrude Hawk chocolates to help raise money to put the event on.Randazzo comes from a family of Scouts. His great-grandfather was a Scout executive. Randazzo is the first in the family to aspire to become a farmer, says Randazzo's mother. He plans to remain with Troop 109 after ending his Scouting career in order to assist future scouts of the troop. It is custom that Scouts leave their troops at 18, but some stay to offer help.Randazzo has not indicated any plans to become a Scoutmaster, but it is an option for him in the future. The Family Fun Day is free admission.
