A woman suffered burns in a dwelling fire that broke out late Monday night in Mahoning Township.
Township police Chief Audie Mertz said the call came in at 11 p.m. for a report of a dwelling fire at 682 Strauss Valley Drive.
Mertz said a woman who lives in the home suffered burns and was taken by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Hospital — Cedar Crest.
He said several others inside the home were uninjured.
“She ran back inside the house to try to get one of the dogs,” Mertz said. “She came back out on her own.”
Mertz said he wasn’t sure of the dog’s condition.
A state fire marshal was at the scene and said the fire will be listed as accidental, Mertz said.
“Electricity was out in the home,” he said. “They had a candle burning, and that’s what caused the fire.”
Mertz said they remained on scene until nearly 3:30 this morning.
Also assisting township police at the scene were the Mahoning Valley Fire Department, Lehighton Fire Department, East Penn Township Fire Department, Jim Thorpe Fire Department, two trucks from Summit Hill Fire Department, West Penn Township Fire Department, Lehighton Police Department, Mahoning Valley Ambulance, and Lehighton Ambulance.
