Owl Creek Reservoir activities planned this weekend

The Owl Creek Reservoir in Tamaqua will be a destination place this Saturday, with a variety of activities planned from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A variety of activities are planned at the recreation area, which features upper and lower dams.

The Tamaqua Area Animal Rescue group will hold its annual dog walk, with registrations set for noon. The walk will begin at 1 p.m. The rescue group is a nonprofit agency working to help the neglected, abused and lost animals in the greater Tamaqua area.

Porcupine Pat McKinney will lead a nature walk around the reservoir beginning at 1 p.m., pointing out the natural beauty of the area and recreational opportunities. The area has two walking trails, the flat Tenderfoot Trail that is designated as easy and the Eagle’s Nest Trail that includes an uphill climb to the State Game Lands.

The reservoir is perfect for bike riding, as a group of volunteers work tirelessly to create suitable walking and biking paths; as well as for fishing (catch and release only) and small watercraft, such as canoes and kayaks. There will also be an opportunity to “test ride” a kayak.

Lunch will be available at the concession stand, while free water and snowcones will be provided.
