Cell tower zoning issue is continued

Wednesday's zoning hearing board meeting regarding construction of a cellphone tower in Coaldale has been continued and will be heard at 6 p.m. Sept. 30.

Attorney Richard Lemanowicz, representing CiG Towers LLC, requested the continuance."We've learned of several alternative properties," Lemanowicz said. "If the properties are more suitable, I believe the borough would prefer it."CiG filed an application with the borough to construct a commercial antenna support structure and to use the site as a wireless commercial communications site. The proposed tower was to be located at the intersection of Third and Lehigh streets and Moser Avenue, on county-owned land.Members of the zoning hearing board at first resisted the request for a continuance, citing the length of time eight months which has passed since the first application. The zoning hearing board at first voted unanimously to deny the continuance.Lemanowicz said that CiG wanted to "explore everything" and was looking at several properties which are owned by Coaldale. Members of the zoning hearing board then rescinded that motion and agreed to the continuance. Members of the zoning hearing board are Ed Flyzik, John Unitas and Jim Filer.Coaldale council President Tom Keerans and Councilwoman Yvonne Stoffey were the only council members who attended the meeting. Without a quorum, Stoffey and Keerans couldn't vote to accept the continuance. That matter will be on the agenda for the next borough council meeting so council can ratify the actions of the zoning hearing board.
