A look back: April 17, 1987

State and local officials on Thursday dedicated the new State Correctional Institution at Frackville, the second of four new correctional institutions to be completed as part of a record $300 million statewide prison expansion and renovation program.

Acting state Corrections Commissioner Glen R. Jeffes said the new facility will add 450 cells to the state’s correctional facility and will result in 250 positions being created, 70 percent of them being corrections officers.

The institution’s estimated $8 million annual operating budget will include approximately $5.6 million for salaries and benefits for staff.

The construction costs for the new jail totaled $27.4 million.
