A Kunkletown man died just inside the front door to his home after allegedly being shot by his neighbor Wednesday evening, and his son died on the operating table of gunshot wounds, said Monroe County coroner Robert Allen.

State police have accused Garry Sherwood Flyte, 54, of shooting Jeffery A. Place, 54, and Place’s son Steven Powell, 30, at about 6:50 p.m.

Place was pronounced dead on the scene, and Powell died while undergoing surgery at Pocono Mountain Regional Medical Center, where he had been taken by ambulance. He could not be taken by medical helicopter due to weather conditions, Allen said.

Autopsies are scheduled to be performed on both men tomorrow at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest.

Flyte also shot Place and Powell’s German Shepherd. Authorities tried to get local veterinarians to come to the house to euthanize the dog were unsuccessful. After three and one-half hours, a state trooper’s friend who is a veterinarian came out to put the dog down, Allen said.

According to a press release issued by state police at Lehighton, Flyte went to the victim’s house at 422 Meixsell valley road in Eldred Township and shot Powell in the abdomen. Powell ran from the house, and Flyte shot Place, then shot the family dog.

Flyte then went back to his own house and left the gun there. He returned to the victim’s house, called 911 and told dispatchers he had “shot three people.”

Police arrested Flyte at Powell and Place’s house without incident.
