Nesquehoning police discover heroin, money in traffic stop

A Hazleton man is facing drug charges after he failed to stop at a stop sign.

Nesquehoning Police Chief Sean Smith reported that police have arrested Joshua Ynoe Mejia, 23, of 525 W. First St., for possession of a large amount of heroin and other drug use.According to the affidavit, patrolman Carl Breiner was monitoring traffic at the intersection of routes 209 and 93 Tuesday just before 8:30 p.m.He saw a black Audi sedan that was traveling south on 93, turn left onto Route 209 without stopping at the posted stop sign.Breiner conducted a vehicle stop and as he approached the car, he detected the odor of burnt marijuana.The driver then identified himself as Mejia and told Breiner that he did not have a valid driver's license. This was verified through the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation database.Mejia then admitted to smoking marijuana a short time before being pulled over.Breiner asked Mejia to submit to field sobriety tests, which he did and failed. He was arrested and charged for driving under the influence.Mejia also permitted Breiner to search the vehicle. Inside the driver's compartment police found several bundles of suspected heroin. More was also discovered in a second location in the driver's compartment.Following the two discoveries, the search was stopped and the vehicle was seized until a warrant could be secured. Found during the search included five-and-a-half bricks of heroin, which contained 250 bags; synthetic weed and a large quantity of money.Mejia admitted that he was driving his friend to a location to get heroin and then return to Hazleton when he was stopped by police.Mejia also submitted to a blood test and results are pending.He is charged with possession with intent to manufacture or deliver a controlled substance, possession of a controlled substance, driving under the influence of a controlled substance, duties of a stop sign, driver required to be licensed and possession of drug paraphernalia.Smith said that charges are pending for the passenger of the vehicle.Jim Thorpe Police assisted during the incident.
