Lights brighten up Weissport park

By Amanda Treible atreible@tnonline.com

The park in Weissport is getting Christmas lights for the first time in years thanks to the Beltzville Lions Club and the sponsors of the event. The official lighting ceremony was Saturday night.

"This is the first time the park's been lit up in a very, very long time," said Shelly Zellner, first vice president of the Beltzville Lions Club.

The Lions Club wanted to spruce up the park for the community. They hope to make this a yearly event.

"We're going to see what the response is," said president of the Lions Club Tom Zellner. "Hopefully this will do well for businesses in town and we can get their support."

The candy cane walkways mixed with the Christmas music set up the mood and holiday spirit.

"The kids love Christmas lights," said Melissa Mullins. "They're really excited."

Mullins and her children enjoyed the countdown to the lights while they were line to meet Santa and get a candy cane.

The Franklin Township Lions Club loaned the lights to the park, Jim Thorpe Neighborhood Bank gave monetary gifts to support the lighting and Yenser's Tree Farm donated the Christmas tree. The Weissport Recreational Committee and Weissport School Reuinion also sponsored the lights.

Santa was a victim of the fire on 2nd Street in Lehighton. His suit burned in the fire and the organizers were worried about getting him to the event at all.

The true Christmas spirit is shown through Santa's willingness to give despite losing everything.
