Carbon County court - drug cases

Three people facing drug-related charges entered guilty pleas in Carbon County court on Thursday.

President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II accepted pleas from the following:Tayshawn William Hudson, 23, formerly of Lansford and now of Hazleton, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. He also pleaded to tampering with evidence, stemming from the same incident.On April 1 Lehighton police conducted a traffic stop along Ninth Street for speeding (45 in a 25 zone). At the stop, police smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Hudson fled the vehicle and a foot chase ensued. During the chase police saw Hudson throw something onto the ground. He was eventually stopped and taken into custody. Police found what he threw, a baggie of marijuana which led to the tampering charge. He was also found to have drug paraphernalia on him.Nanovic placed him on probation for a year on each count, running concurrently, and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.Matthew John Sywensky, 43, of Easton, pleaded to one count of possession of a small amount of marijuana. He was arrested on Sept. 8, 2016, by Palmerton police following a traffic stop along Delaware Avenue. At the stop police learned there was an active bench warrant for Sywensky's arrest out of Lehigh County. While taking him into custody the marijuana was found on him.Nanovic imposed a fine of $500.Jessalyn Maree Rider, 24, of Weatherly, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia. She was arrested on March 11, 2016, by Mahoning Township police who responded to a residence along Pine Hollow Drive for a report of a female entering the home and threatening the occupants with a knife. The female fled the residence before police arrived but officers were given a description of the vehicle, which was later stopped and Rider was identified as the woman involved. She denied having a knife, and none was found by police.Nanovic placed her on probation for six months, consecutive with a term she is serving in Lehigh County, and ordered she get a drug and alcohol evaluation and zero tolerance for drug and alcohol use.She is currently an inmate in the county prison.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation.
