Grace Thorpe, the daughter of Olympic great Jim Thorpe and a frequent visitor to the community that was named after her father where he is buried, has died. She was 86.
She was a tribal judge and an anti-nuclear activist.
Grace became a popular figure in the Carbon County seat, where she returned periodically for special occasions celebrating the community’s ties to her late father. She appeared in parades, participated in tributes to her father and made many friends and acquaintances during her many visits here.
A World War II veteran, she served in the Women’s Army Corps and was a direct descendant of Sac and Fox chief Black Hawk and was of Potawatomi, Kickapoo and Menominee heritage.
