Rod and gun club donates to help animal shelter

Bowmanstown Rod and Gun Club is helping the dogs.

On Thursday, the officers of the club presented the Carbon County Commissioners with a check for $2,000 to help offset operating costs at the animal shelter.Kevin Strohl, president, said that the group was impressed by the shelter and how it is operated.Commissioner Thomas J. Gerhard said that this donation will really help. He added that last year, the organization donated $1,000 to the shelter.Commissioners' Chairman Wayne Nothstein thanked everyone for the generous donation.This is not the first group Bowmanstown Rod and Gun Club helped out, Strohl noted.Last year, the group gave $67,000 to area organizations such as fire departments and non-profits.In other matters, the commissioners approved the following actions:• Accepted the resignation of Jerry Dotter of Jim Thorpe from the Carbon County Conservation District.• Accepted the resignations of Ryan J. Bortee of Lehighton and Larry R. Williams of Tamaqua as corrections officers, effective Jan. 26.• Approved the hiringof Christine E. Erohof Weatherly as clerical aide, Archives, effective Feb. 9.• Approved the hiring of Ashley M. Hummel of Nesquehoning as part-time cleaning person, Buildings and Grounds, effective Feb. 2.• Approved the hiring of James J. Marks of Jim Thorpe as part-time seasonal park maintenance, Parks, effective May 1.• Approved the leave of absence extension of Jesus A. Morales of Jim Thorpe, corrections officer, from Jan. 23, 2015 to Jan. 22, 2016.
