Kunkletown area man dies when bus he was passenger in struck by van
A Kunkletown area man was killed Wednesday morning when the Carbon County Transit Authority bus he was a passenger in was struck by a van.
Franklin Township police said Herbert Farenkoff, 60, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash which occurred along Route 209, about 50 yards south of LaRose’s Skating Rink, just before 9 a.m.Police said the van was driven by William Pomrink Jr., 33, northbound when the van apparently crossed the center line and struck the bus, which was operated by James Connell, 73, of Jim Thorpe.The van’s front end struck the bus to the rear of the driver’s area. Franklin Township Fire Company volunteers extricated Pomrink from the van.Pomrink, of Interchange Road, Lehighton, also lists a New Jersey address.Pomrink and another passenger in the bus, Regina Brown, 83, also of Kunkletown, were taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, for treatment of serious but not life-threatening injuries. Connell was also injured and was taken to a hospital, police said.Debris from the crash struck a vehicle operated by Tiffany Moyer, of Mahoning Mountain Road, Lehighton. She was not injured, police said.The roadway was shutdown due to an extensive fuel spill.Police said the road was closed the rest of Wednesday into today as a Northampton County area firm that cleans up such spills responded to the scene.Township police were assisted by state police and emergency personnel from the township and Lehighton. Police also noted the exceptional cooperation of motorists who were tied up in traffic due to the crash.Police said two motorists began to perform CPR on Farenkoff before the arrival of ambulance personnel. The cooperation, police said, by so many people to assist was "amazing."The bus is owned by the county but is operated by the Easton Coach Company, contracted by the county to operate the transportation system.Joe Scott, president and CEO of Easton Coach, released a statement Wednesday."I am very saddened to report that this accident has claimed the life of one of the passengers on the bus. Another passenger on the bus has been taken to the hospital with injuries," Scott said."Our thoughts are with the affected families and friends of everyone involved and we are indebted to the local authorities for acting quickly to care for those who were injured."
