Supervisors' races highlight balloting in Lehighton area

There are five contested races to be decided by the voters in municipalities in the Lehighton area on Tuesday, when the 2015 General Election takes place.

Three supervisors' races, in East Penn, Franklin and Mahoning townships; a borough council race in Lehighton; and seats on the Lehighton Area School District Board of Education all have challenged races.Meanwhile, there are no contested races in Parryville or Weissport.Here is a look at what voters in those areas can expect to see on the voting machines when they report to vote:East Penn TownshipThe voters in East Penn Township are slated to elect three members to the board of supervisors, all for six-year terms. The candidates are Democrats Randy Pfeiffer and Guy Barry and Republicans William G. Schwab, Alice Berger and Richard T. Deluca.Steven Heckman is launching a write-in campaign for the two-year term.No one is running for either the six-year term as auditor or six-year term as constable.Franklin TownshipTwo candidates are aspiring to the six-year supervisor's term available in Franklin Township.They are Democrat Bill Hill and Republican Barbara Beltz.Two other positions are on the ballot, auditor and constable, both for six-year terms, but there are no candidates for those positions.Mahoning TownshipA three-person race for two six-year terms on Mahoning Township's board of supervisors exists.Seeking the positions are Democrats Frank Ruch and Sue Ann Lewine and Republican Brian Reeser.Delroy Ruch Jr., a Republican, is running unopposed for a six-year term as auditor, and Charles Pollock, also a GOP member, is unchallenged for the six-year term as constable.No one is seeking a two-year term as auditor.Lehighton BoroughSeven candidates are running for four four-year terms on the Lehighton Borough Council.They include Democrats Grant R. Hunsicker, John Wayne Bird and Connie Ahner and Republicans Darryl L. Ahner, Jared McEvoy, Lisa Perry and John J. Kreitz.Lehighton's voters are also slated to elect a constable for a six-year term. Thomas Sitarchyk is seeking the position and appears on both ballots, having won both Democratic and Republican nominations in the primary.Lehighton School BoardIn Lehighton Area School District balloting, which includes East Penn, Franklin and Mahoning townships and Parryville, Lehighton and Weissport boroughs, four four-year terms are up for grabs.Four of the six candidates appear to have the edge in the balloting as their names appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, having won nominations from those two parties in the primary as well. They include Byron J. Arner, Wayne W. Wentz, Andrew Yenser and Marianne Dwyer.The other two candidates are virtually running against each other, those being Richard R. Beltz, the Democratic candidate, and Frank Tamburri, who is a GOP candidate.Parryville BoroughOnly one name appears on the ballot in Parryville Borough.That is Michael Grant, a Republican who is seeking one of two four-year terms on the borough council.The other nomination is vacant, as is ballot positions on both parties for the six-year term as constable that is up for grabs.Weissport BoroughThere are no municipal races in Weissport Borough this time around.The voters are scheduled to elect two council members to four-year terms, although the lone candidate is Democrat Arland F. Moyer Jr.James Osborne, another Democrat, is seeking the six-year term as constable and is unopposed.
