‘Art and Sports’ at Allentown Museum of Art

Legendary boxer Larry Holmes headlines an afternoon of discussion on July 15 about the confluence of art and sports in our culture.

Holmes will speak about his life and his career as a boxer after the screening of ESPN’s 30/30 documentary, “Muhammad and Larry,” the story of Holmes’ 1980 heavyweight match with Muhammad Ali.

The film begins at 3 p.m. and will be followed by a Q&A with the athlete that will last until 5 p.m.

Admission to the museum and all events that day are free, but seating for the Holmes event is first come first served, so the public is encouraged to arrive early.

Earlier in the day, at noon, aspiring teenage photographers will learn from a local photographer about the principles of photography and develop their own unique photographic perspectives.

Inspiration will come from two local sports professionals: Dante Holmes of the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks and Darrun Hilliard of the NBA’s San Antonio Spurs.

Space is limited, so reservations are recommended.

For reservations contact Elena Ostock at eostock@allentownartmusuem.org.

Entry to the museum’s summer exhibition “Who Shot Sports: A Photographic History, 1843 to the Present” is also free that day from noon to 4 p.m.

A display of nearly 200 epic sports photographs, the show originated at the Brooklyn Museum and during its run in Allentown, has sparked conversation about the influence of sports photography on cultures around the world.

A docent-led tour of the exhibition at 2 p.m. will be free to all.

“Who Shot Sports” continues through July 29.

“Sports and Art” is part of the Museum’s HeARThstone Project and is supported by the generosity of the Harry C. Trexler Trust. The HeARThstone Project is rooted in the belief that art can and does change lives.

The Allentown Art Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. and until 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month.
