Special 'Star Wars' delivery for scholarship recipient

When nursing student Hayley Williams was searching for scholarships to complete her last year of education, she had no idea what to expect when she put in an application with Folds of Honor. She simply wanted to pursue a career in the medical field, with an aspiration to work with veterans.

When a film crew arrived at her Brodheadsville home earlier this month to shoot some footage, she figured it was just a profile of the potential candidates for the scholarship. So when Adam Driver, who played the villain Kylo Ren in the latest "Star Wars" film, walked through her door to hand her a check, she must have been flabbergasted. "At that point, truthfully, I thought he was part of the crew, because so many people had been in and out of the house," Williams, who is a "Star Wars" fan, along with her father, said with a laugh. "I'm just standing there, staring at him, and my dad says, 'You look like Kylo Ren.' And Adam says, 'Oh, no, that's my twin brother.' And we're just looking at him, and he goes, 'Oh, no, that's me.' "Folds of Honor, a charity group that provides scholarships for the children and spouses of disabled and fallen veterans, caught the eye of Williams, the daughter of Army MP John Williams, while she was exploring options to fund her final year at Eastern University."They happened to ask me if I would be willing to do filming for them, and I was 'Yeah, sure, why not?' I had no idea I was even getting the scholarship, I just thought it was a cool opportunity, and we found out when he showed up," she said. "We talked to him for a little bit. We didn't have any idea what was going on. He had an envelope in his hand, and he said, 'I'm congratulating you because you won the scholarship.'"The video of the presentation made waves when it was released online earlier this week.Williams' father and Driver share some common ground. In the early 2000s, the actor enlisted in the Marine Corps, though he was injured before deployment. Her father's service is one of the driving factors behind Williams' chosen specialty, as she witnessed the necessity for veteran care at a young age."In my experience, he served before I was born, so I saw the repercussions of his service," she said. "One of my vivid memories of being a kid was when his back went out and he couldn't move. He was laying on the coach, and a bunch of our family members had to come pick him up, get him in the car, and take him to the hospital. It's a mix of my personal experiences and what my dad's gone through with everything."John Williams was thrilled with the award, along with the potential to focus more attention on helping veterans and their families."Sometimes the veterans are forgotten, and if they're forgotten, so are their families," he said. "I think it's great, that this is getting out there with the video, so other veterans can see that what their kids can apply for. It's amazing that they stepped up and took charge to help us out."In addition to the Folds of Honor contribution, beer company Budweiser stepped in to round out the rest of the cost of Williams' tuition. Thanks to the scholarship, a lot of the pressure that Williams was facing has been alleviated, allowing her to focus on school and her future in the health care field."My own personal circumstances have pushed me to strive to be a better nurse and health care worker than people that have taken care of him, and my family. This scholarship means that I won't have to work two jobs during the school semester, and I won't have to pinch so many pennies and constantly have to worry how I won't be able to pay for school," she said.John added, "She's got the personality and the heart to do so. She's got that caring heart, and I think it's neat that she'll be able to give back."
