Veterans Memorial

Craig Zurn, president and CEO of Jim Thorpe National Bank, presented a check for $1,000 to Richard Nothstein, Joe Uhnak and Robert Solt, members of Palmerton United Veteran's Organization (PUVO). PUVO's mission to support the Palmerton Veterans Memorial in Palmerton Borough Park.

"We're a community bank and try to stay in touch with our community. We give back to those who give to us. One of our priorities of our giving is to our veterans," said Zurn.The bank's $1,000 brings the total donations to date to $48,700 toward the $123,000 goal needed to build the memorial.The actual bronze sculpture that will grace the site of the memorial, titled "Some Gave All," is currently located in the foyer of Country Harvest on Delaware Ave. It was made by James Nathan Muir. He made 10 memorials and Palmerton has acquired the first. The sculpture includes the poem written by Maj. Michael David O'Donnell, Jan. 1, 1970 from Dak To, Vietnam, ending with "And in that time, When men decide and feel safe to call war insane, Take one moment to embrace, Those gentle heroes you left behind."An artist's rendition of the proposed memorial is at the site in the park for anyone to peruse.The plan is to hold a dedication of the memorial on Nov. 11, 2012, the year of the 100th birthday of Palmerton.The PUVO is asking for help in retrieving veteran's names. Any person that served or is serving their country from the Palmerton area will have their name on the memorial. Persons from the Revolutionary Era to the present, (a span of over 230 years) will be included. If you moved from the Palmerton area but enlisted in the service while you lived in Palmerton, your name will be included. If you enlisted elsewhere but lived most of your life in Palmerton, your name will be included.The information needed is name, address, branch of service, dates of service, rank, date of birth.The information can be sent to: Palmerton Legion, Palmerton VFW, PO Box 84, 2020 Forest Inn Rd., Palmerton, PA 18071; or email Ed at

onlyelvs@ptd.net.There are opportunities to say "Thank You" and to honor veterans by a listing on the granite wall or on the walkway.On the granite wall you can have an individual or family name for a $500 donation with up to 35 characters. A corporate or business name can be added for a $750 donation with up to 35 characters.For the walkway, there can be a listing on large 10-inch by 14-inch granite blocks, with a military emblem, three lines for $200, 12 characters per line. If no emblem used, 5 lines, 12 characters per line.A listing on large 6-inch by 9-inch brick paver with no military emblems possible, $50 with four lines, 11 characters per line. Listing on large 4-inch by 8-inch brick paver with no military emblems possible, $40 for three lines, 11 characters per line.
