Seven inmates at the Monroe County Correctional Facility in Snydersville, have been charged relating to a fight on May 23.
Officials said the fight broke out around 9 p.m. in the C-Unit, resulting in an emergency lockdown of the facility. Officials said up to 15 inmates were involved in the incident.The county district attorney's office said the arrests are the result of their investigation of the fight.The probe included interviews with correctional officers and a review of the security footage recorded by the jail's surveillance system.The fight broke out after a confrontation between Fred Baumgartner, 36, and Tyrell Donta Ravenell, 29, of Wind Gap, over usage of the phones in the day area of the C-Unit, police said.Baumgartner reported he was approached in his cell by Patrick Player, 21, and Regulus A. Hoyt, 27, both of Mount Pocono, who were identified as associates of Ravenell.Police said all three inmates were ordered out of the cell by a corrections officer.Other inmates began to circle around Baumgartner and started punching and kicking him. In defending himself, Baumgartner bit and struck other inmates, officials said.Baumgartner was treated for multiple abrasions and contusions. Player had a bite mark on his right thigh.Officials said the criminal charges have been filed with the office of District Judge Jolana Krawitz.The district attorney's office said Ravenell, Player, Hoyt, Kevin Kendell Strickland, 26, Johnathyn Aasin, 21, and Luis Medina, 43, all of Mount Pocono, will have preliminary hearings before Judge Krawitz.Dayquan Dominique Salaman, 25, another Mount Pocono resident, who has since been transferred to federal prison, will be returned to Monroe County to face his charges.Police said Ravenell, Player, Strickland, White, Medina and Salaman are each charged with one count of riot and two counts each of disorderly conduct and simple assault. Hoyt was charged with one count of simple assault.Officials said Baumgartner was not charged.
