The driver of a vehicle was flown to a hospital after he collided with a train in Nesquehoning Tuesday morning.
Nesquehoning police Chief Sean Smith said that he and officer Timothy Wuttke were called to Mountain Avenue, the entrance to Ametek, at 11:11 a.m. for a crash involving a Reading and Northern freight train and a Jeep Cherokee with entrapment.Smith said the train was nearing the intersection and had given warning horns announcing its approach when the driver of the Jeep attempted to cross the intersection. The train struck the Jeep, which was pushed down an embankment and into the creek below.The driver was extricated from the vehicle and flown to Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest for his injuries. The train engineer was not injured.Carbon County Emergency Management Agency officials were called to verify that no fluids or gasoline spilled into the creek.Reading and Northern police were also called to the scene and asked Nesquehoning police to lead the investigation.Smith said that more details will be released following the investigation and declined to release the names of the drivers at this time.
