Nesquehoning Hose Company is trying again to secure funding for its building expansion project.
Shawn McArdle, captain of the fire department, approached Nesquehoning Borough Council on Wednesday to ask for its support in the fire company applying for a Local Share Account grant for the resurfacing of the parking lot and hill, drainage work and two additional garage bays at the fire company. The fire department is asking for $436,871.62 through the grant to cover the project.Council approved the request for support. This isn't the first time the fire company has applied for LSA money for the expansion project. In July 2016, it was awarded $198,835 to excavate an existing embankment on the south side of the property, as well as build a retaining wall to correct a drainage problem. The additional amount is needed though to finish phase two.The Nesquehoning Hose Company has been working on developing the expansion project since 2014.In other fire company matters, fire Chief John McArdle told council that the company's aerial truck will be out of service for 12 to 14 weeks starting next Tuesday because it needs to be repainted due to a defective batch of product from the paint supplier. He said that it will take that long because of all the things that need to be removed from the truck's body before it can be sanded down and repainted. The cost for the job will be handled by the warranty, McArdle said.Nesquehoning Hose Company obtained the 103-foot aerial truck, which was manufactured by Kovatch Mobile Equipment, in 2012 at a cost of just under $800,000.The fire company will also host its annual community festival Aug. 12 and 13 on the grounds of the department. The two-day festival will include a variety of homemade foods, games for children, a Chinese auction, live entertainment nightly and a firetruck parade through the borough.
