More charges have been filed against a tax preparer from Slatington after Bethlehem Township police charged him with pocketing his client's tax payments.
Nick J. Chacanias, 55, was charged Wednesday with tax by deception, two counts of theft by failure to dispose of funds and one count of receiving stolen property.Bethlehem Township police said that a township couple filed a report with police in regard to an accountant who stole money from them. The couple said they hired Chacanias to file their taxes and wrote him four checks that he cashed. The checks were cashed by Chacanias receiving a total of $4,245.The couple said they are now receiving notices that their state, federal and local taxes were never filed or paid. The couple said they contacted Chacanias, who stated he would repay the $4,245, and agreed to meet them at their home on July 25, but never showed. The charges against Chacanias come after the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office in May charged Chacanias with scamming and stealing more than $76,000 over a three-year period from eight different clients who live or work in York, Dauphin, Cumberland and Perry counties.Chacanias is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday before District Judge Patricia Broscius of Bethlehem Township. He is being held on $10,000 bail in Northampton County Prison.
