Weatherly Borough officials say that their new trash collector is answering some of their concerns, but they also need some cooperation from residents.
Council signed a five-year contract with County Waste in December, and in May reported hearing from residents who had issues with the quality of collection. At a council meeting on Monday, Mayor Tom Connors offered residents tips to improve collection."It's all about courtesy. We're trying to work everything out with a meeting to ensure everything goes smoother," he said.Connors said to report major issues with trash collection to the borough, like if they are being missed on a regular basis. He asked residents to put out trash Monday nights because the hauler has been changing the schedule recently."I know there's a bear problem in town, but please put your trash out the night before," he said.He said borough manager Harold Pudliner plans to meet with County Waste this week.Connors said that some things included in the borough's contract aren't being picked up. But at the same time, residents can't throw out anything they want.He said that the contract allows residents to put out a piece of furniture like a couch if they replace theirs. On the other hand, it does not allow for construction debris."Just use common sense, you don't want to kill these guys on the truck either while they're loading stuff up," he said.At council's May meeting, Connors said that he had heard a lot of complaints from residents, as well as people from surrounding municipalities who use County Waste. At the time, the hauler wanted residents to accept large rolling trash cans to be used in place of regular garbage cans."We should make sure they live by the contract they signed, and if we get a year of good service, we can come back in a year and talk about these free cans," Connors said in May.
