Did you shoot a big ‘un in Pennsylvania? During the last three hunting seasons? What’s his score?

Well, here’s your chance to not only see other big bucks hunters have shot, but see how yours matches up to theirs. Entrees must be legally-harvested, fair-chase Pennsylvania whitetail bucks taken within the past three years.

The Schuylkill County Sportsmen’s Association, and the group’s Advisory Board, hopes deer hunting aficionados bring their buck racks to the Schuylkill County Fairgrounds beginning at 11 a.m., lasting until 3 p.m., July 28.

Antlers and/or mounts should be brought to the Sportsmen’s Association Building on the fairgrounds, which is located on Route 895 near Summit Station, Schuylkill County. The organizers hope to display the top bucks during the week of the Schuylkill County Fair, held during the first week of August.

The contest is the brainchild of Craig Morgan, retired head of the Schuylkill County Conservation District and member of the Sportsmen’s Association Advisory Board.

“The goal of the contest is twofold,” Morgan said. “To show people the awesome buck antlers that have developed since the antler restrictions were put in place, and also to pull people into the Sportsmen’s Building, so they can see it.”

You don’t have to have shot a big buck to come watch the measuring.

Also, owners of top bucks have a chance to earn some bucks, with the major sponsors (Yuengling Brewery and Cabela’s) chipping in some prize money. Only one entry is allowed per person.

Morgan said that there will be two divisions, Hunters less than 21 years old, and hunters 21 and older.

Antlers may be on any type of mount, including a simple skull cut. The adult division is sponsored by D.G. Yuengling and Son, with the following prizes: First place, $175 cash or Yuengling 40-quart grizzly cooler; second place, $100 cash or Yuengling Grill and stand; third place, $75 cash or Yuengling products.

The youth division (less than 21 years old at the time of harvest) is sponsored by Cabela’s. First place is a $175 Cabela’s gift card; second place $100 Cabela’s gift card; third place $75 Cabela’s gift card; and fourth place a $50 Cabela’s gift card sponsored by James Seifert and Doyle Dietz.

In case of a tie, the buck having the widest outside spread as determined by the judges will determine the winners. If a second tiebreaker is needed, the buck with the greatest number of legal points will be the winner.

And if you’ve already got a buck on your radar for this season, be ready for next year’s contest.

The 2019 competition will include bucks from 2018 and 2019 harvests, and those bucks must be accompanied by a harvest tag.
