Carbon County court - guilty pleas
A total of six defendants in pending criminal cases entered guilty pleas on Friday in Carbon County court.
Judge Joseph J. Matika accepted pleas from the following:Marc Thomas Muffley, 35, of Lansford, pleaded to one count of retail theft.He was arrested by Lansford police on April 24 for an incident at the Family Dollar Store along East Patterson Street. He had a 10-year-old juvenile with him at the time, but the district attorney's office agreed to drop a count of endangering the welfare of a child.Matika placed him on probation for a year and ordered him to render 50 hours of community service, attend and successfully complete parenting classes and stay out of the store.Tyren Maurice Landis, 29, of Williamsport, pleaded to one count of resisting arrest.He was arrested on May 27 by Weatherly police following a traffic stop along Plane Street. He was a backseat passenger in the vehicle and fled when the vehicle stopped. Following a short foot chase he was taken into custody. He said he fled because he knew there was a warrant for his arrest.Matika sentenced him to serve 52 to 104 days in jail with credit for 104 days already served and paroled him.He will not be released from the county prison, where he is currently an inmate, as he has a state parole board detainer on him for a pending violation petition.Margaret Flores, 32, of Nesquehoning pleaded to one count of retail theft.She was arrested on May 11 by Nesquehoning police for an incident at Arieta's True Value along Willow Lane.She was placed on probation for six months and ordered to render 25 hours of community service, make restitution of $17 to the victim and stay out of the store.Linda M. Szczecina, 53, of Tamaqua, pleaded to one count of harassment in exchange for charge of simple assault being dropped by the DA.She was charged for an incident on April 1 filed by Lansford police. She assaulted her then live-in boyfriendat her then residence.Matika sentenced her to time-served 11 days.Douglas James Schartel Jr., 36, of Tamaqua, pleaded to one count of false identification to law enforcement.He was arrested on March 25, 2016, in the300 block of West Abbott Street, by Lansford police. At that location he gave police a false name during an investigation.Matika sentenced him to time-served, 40 days, to one year in jail and ordered him to render 50 hours of community service.Schartel is not going anywhere; he has detainers on him from Schuylkill County.Sueann Colloty, 39, of Lehighton, pleaded to one count of retail theft.She was arrested on May 3 by Mahoning Township police for an incident at the Walmart store.She was placed on probation for a year and ordered to render 50 hours of community service, make restitution of $242.74 to Walmart and stay out of the store.Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
