IronPigs column: Three Phils players with team
The past IronPigs home stand was one for stargazing. Three Phillies players — Brandon Marsh, Ranger Suarez, and Weston Wilson — were all with the Pigs for at least part of the stretch of six games as the players looked to get healthy and return to the Phillies roster.
Ranger Suarez had the most productive stint of the three players, making two strong starts for Lehigh Valley.
In his second start on Sunday, the Phillies wanted him to throw around 75 pitches and he threw 78 with eight strikeouts. In his two Triple-A rehab starts, Suarez allowed just one earned run over 9 2/3 innings of work with 13 strikeouts. The Phillies will now decide whether to have him throw another rehab start or rejoin the Phillies, who are hosting Washington and then Arizona at Citizens Bank Park.
Brandon Marsh had a far less than perfect stint. The Phillies outfielder, who was in an 0-for-31 slump with the Phillies, hit just .182 (2-for-11) with Lehigh Valley and struck out six times.
If the offensive performance wasn’t concerning, the fact that Marsh left Sunday’s game early when he felt cramping in his injured right hamstring, which put him on the IL to begin with. He will be examined in Philadelphia to determine the next step on his potential return to Philadelphia.
Weston Wilson had been with the team for their series in Gwinnett and played in just the series opener last week against Columbus. In six games with Lehigh Valley, he hit .281 (5-for-28) and played well defensively. The Phillies activated him last Wednesday and designated Kody Clemens for assignment.
Speaking of Clemens, the Phillies had to either trade the versatile utility player or try to slip him through waivers in order to send him to Lehigh Valley because he was out of options. Nobody figured he would make it through waivers and the Phillies were able to send him to the Minnesota Twins for “cash considerations.”
In case you’re wondering how much cash, nobody knows for sure. Rest assured that the money exchanged isn’t too much. Major League Baseball has a rule that any trade that includes one-million dollars or more exchanging hands has to be approved by the commissioner’s office and trades like this never get near that level. Odds are the money was somewhere in the $20,000 range.
OLD FRIENDS … Darick Hall, who is now at Triple-A Indianapolis in the Pirates organization, homered for the first time this season last Tuesday, but is still batting just .200 (12-for-56) this season. More bad news for Scott Kingery, who was off to a fast start with the Salt Lake City Bees, the Triple-A affiliate of the Angels, hitting .387 (12-for-31) in eight games but has not played since April 6 and is on the IL with an undisclosed injury. Former Phillies reliever Hector Neris recently joined the Bees and blew a save opportunity in his second outing with the team. He is 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two appearances.
WHO? WHAT? ... The names Cade Fergus and Erick Brito are not household names among IronPigs fans, but they are gaining some recognition. Brito had back-to-back three-hit games with Lehigh Valley last week to go 6-for-6 and has his season average at .324. After batting just .211 in 41 games with Reading last season, the Phillies challenged Brito with a promotion to Lehigh Valley, and it paid off. Fergus was batting just .185 (5-for-27) with Reading this season but had two home runs in 11 games when he was unexpectedly promoted to Lehigh Valley. Fergus has homered three times in 10 plate appearances. The outfielder hit a two-run walk-off home run to the top of the centerfield grass berm Thursday night to beat Columbus and then homered the following night coming off the bench. Fergus is 6-for-10 with LV to go with three homers and six RBIs.
