Teens charged in Chestnuthill burglary, vandalism spree

State police at the Fern Ridge barracks arrested two juveniles on multiple charges following a shooting/burglary/criminal mischief spree on Saturday in the West End of Monroe County.

According to Monroe County District Attorney Michael Mancuso, one of his assistant district attorneys, Chad Martinez, who was “on call” for the weekend, assisted police in approving several search warrants and juvenile court charges against the juveniles.

He said one of the juveniles has been taken into custody and is in a detention center awaiting a detention hearing, while he and the other juvenile will be ordered to appear in the juvenile court in the near future.

The district attorney initially was summoned at 5:11 a.m. Saturday to a residence on Fairview Circle, Chestnuthill Township, for a report of a shooting of a window at a residence sometime during the night. Troopers discovered a projectile within the residence.

As the morning progressed, Mancuso said, several additional incidents were reported to police.

He said a burglary happened at Lapp Structures, an outdoor shed dealer located at Route 209 in the township. The main office was in complete disarray with several items destroyed and thrown.

Mancuso said a large desk and a shelf were overturned; multiple remnants of discharged fireworks were located throughout the office with black gun powder covering the floor; and items such as televisions, computer monitors, a printer and a water cooler were overthrown and intentionally damaged.

The DA said troopers also responded to the Bright Fuel gas station located on Route 209 for the report of a burglary.

They determined two suspects attempted to gain entry into the front door of the gas station and successfully burglarized a camper located behind the building. Items were stolen from the camper, including fireworks and other miscellaneous items.

Mancuso said after reviewing video surveillance, troopers identified one of the suspects as a 16-year-old boy from prior recent police incidents.

As the spree continued, police were summoned to an additional burglary at West End Tobacco and Vape, located at Route 209. Officers viewed video surveillance in which two suspects were observed approaching the entrance of the shop.

One of the suspects, Mancuso said, who was later identified as a 17-year-old juvenile male, displayed a pistol and shot three several rounds through the front window. He said the video shows the juveniles removing excess glass from the window frame and climbing inside the business.

Both juveniles took several items from the shop, including nicotine vapes, THC products and other items for purchase.

Mancuso said police interviewed the 16-year-old juvenile in the presence of a parent, during which time he admitted to being with the 17-year-old and gaining entry into Lapp Structures. He admitted to removing several items within the camper, including fireworks, two handguns, ammunition and a full bottle of Captain Morgan.

The DA said the juvenile related they walked towards the West End Fairgrounds and fired approximately 40 rounds of ammunition from the handguns in different directions.

Afterwards, they walked to the West End Tobacco and Vape shop, where the 16-year-old said his accomplice shot multiple rounds into the front window of the business, where they made entry and stole items, exiting through the broken window and fleeing the scene.

The juvenile also admitted they vandalized the flower tent at Dunkelberger’s Sports Outfitters, where they obtained a fire extinguisher and sprayed the tent and several potted plants that were listed for sale.

In announcing the arrests, Mancuso praised officers and investigators from the Fern Ridge barrack for “a good job and a thorough job in bringing this case forward.”
