Eldred to seek public works employee
The Eldred Township Public Works Department will be looking for a new full-time employee sometime this year.
The supervisor approved the resignation of a full-time employee during their meeting on April 16.
Supervisor Jonathan Gula said that he will replace the person, but probably not until after the township administrator position is filled. The township is currently looking to fill the position, because the treasurer wants to retire soon.
The supervisors created the township administrator position because the township secretary is looking to retire in 2026. The township administrator would do the work of the treasurer, and some of the work of the secretary. No interviews have been held yet.
Gula also updated the supervisors on what his department’s workers has been doing. They finished street sweeping, doing truck maintenance and cleaning the salt off the trucks.
They also have been cleaning out the drain pipes and trimming trees on roads that are slated for paving work this summer.
The supervisors approved putting out to bid for paving supplies after the solicitor, Michael Gaul, has reviewed the list.
Gula said the community cleanup day brought in 5,400 pounds of tires, 30 televisions, 10,000 pounds of scrap metal, and filled two 40-yard dumpsters.
Also at the meeting, Donna Deihl, the manager of the Kunkletown Thrift Store in the Eldred Township Community Center, said, “Sales are unbelievable.”
The store held a prom dress sale in late March. Dresses are still available for $20 each.
Deihl said there will be new volunteers starting on May 3.
The supervisors approved ordering new blinds for the thrift store in the amount of $12,155 from Penn Blinds in Allentown.
The supervisors also approved letting go of the cleaning company for the community center.
“We’ve had some cleaning issues that we’ve been dealing with,” said Scott Clark, chairman of the supervisors. “The services being provided are not at the level that we had hoped for.”
Clark said the township will be looking to hire a new company to clean the center after the cleaning company is terminated.
