Fillies sprint, jump, throw to sweep
MAHANOY CITY — While sunbathers worked on their tans Wednesday afternoon at Mahanoy Area’s William Fazio Stadium, area track athletes focused on something else — winning.
Nativity used its speed to sprint past Marian and Panther Valley in a Schuylkill League meet, while the Fillies flexed their depth to sweep the girls competition.
The Green Wave boys rolled to 113 points, easily topping Panther Valley (28) and Marian (38). Panther Valley edged Marian 78-59 in the head-to-head matchup. In the girls meet, Marian pulled away from both teams, defeating Nativity 84-56, and rolling past Panther Valley 123-18.
Nativity senior Noah Dolbin highlighted the boys competition with wins in the 110-meter hurdles (14.68) and 300-meter hurdles (40.03). Marian’s Mike Johnson (45.70) and Panther Valley’s Nuredin Gjoca finished second and third, respectively, in the 300s.
Marian had standout performances across several girls events. The 4x800-meter relay team of Addison Fritz, Addy Marek, Teaghan Biros and Ava Fritz posted a winning time of 11:53.60. The Fillies’ 4x100 relay squad — Caitlyn Kovatch, Gabby Osenbach, Addy Fritz and anchor Alizabeth Pikitus — added a victory in 53.39.
Addy Fritz, nicknamed “Juice,” capped off her day with a win in the triple jump at 31-3.5. Panther Valley’s Morgan Orsulak was close behind at 31-3. Orsulak also finished second in the high jump (4-10), narrowly edged out by Marian sophomore Kali Grochowski (5-1), and captured the long jump title (15-6).
“We had a great run,” said senior Ava Fritz, who has committed to Misericordia. “My teammates gave me a lot of room to work with. We had a big lead, but I just wanted to get the best time possible for our group.”
Pikitus, a senior and four-year team leader, appreciated the team’s chemistry in the 4x100. “Our speed is pretty good, and we work well together,” she said. “We can’t get overconfident — we just have to keep working hard and getting better.”
Pikitus and Kovatch placed second and third in the 100-meter dash behind Nativity’s Sara Spolski, who won in 13.02. Marian swept the 400, led by Ava Fritz (1:10.80), with Julia Dvorak and Cara Renhert following. Pikitus also won the 200 (27.76), with Kovatch and Osenbach completing the sweep.
Marian coach Justin Hugel praised both the weather — and his team’s performance.
“This is the type of weather you want for track — not the cold and rain we’ve had,” Hugel said. “It lets everyone compete at their best.”
The Fillies added a win in the 4x400 relay as Dvorak, Brooke Hannis-Miskar, Renhert and Madeline Davis crossed the line in 4:55.20.
On the boys side, Nativity’s Michael Stank won the 100 (11.43), edging Marian’s Jacob Tom (11.55), and added victories in the 200 (22.97) and 400 (51.09). Teammate Connor Felty placed second in the 200, while Panther Valley’s Edison Mitchell was third.
“I can’t say enough about how hard our kids work and compete,” said Panther Valley coach Trish O’Gurek. “We lack depth, but not heart. If we can get more students involved, I think they’ll find it fun. But I feel really good about the group we have — they’re all winners in my eyes.”
Nash Stehr won the 1600 for Nativity (5:00.06), with teammate Nolan Daynorowicz second and Panther Valley’s Abraham Cabrera third. Stehr also won the 3200 (11:55.89), while Daynorowicz captured the 800 (2:16.85) in a Nativity sweep.
Nativity also won the 4x100 relay (46.36), beating Panther Valley (47.74), and claimed the 4x400 (3:39.55) and 4x800 (9:38.78).
FIELD DAY … Marian had a strong showing in the field events. Aidan Milkovits won the shot put (44-0), with teammates Jah Bushati and Lawrence Ader placing second and third. In the discus, Gino Williams of Panther Valley took first with a throw of 118-7, followed by Ader and Bushati. Nativity’s Aiden Becker topped the javelin at 141-6, with Williams and Bushati rounding out the top three.
Jacob Tom claimed the long jump title for Marian with a leap of 21-8. Liam Messina (Nativity) won the high jump (5-10) and triple jump (38-6.5).
