OES tonight

Monroe Chapter No. 99 Order of the Eastern Star will hold its meeting at the Rimrock Masonic Center at 7 p.m.

The meeting will include the regular order of business and the election of officers. A social time will follow.

Mission dinner

Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, Brodheadsville, will hold its Missions Dinner at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

SFRC open

Effort UMC’s Supplemental Food Resource Center is open from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday.

It is requesting donations of cereals, oatmeal, cream of wheat, etc.

Men’s Breakfast

The Men’s Breakfast at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church is usually held on the third Saturday of each month after the 8 a.m. service, but due to Easter it is this Saturday.

Old Tyme sale

The Pocono Old Tyme Farm Equipment’s Consignment sale will be held at the Monroe County West End Fairgrounds in Gilbert on Saturday, starting at 9 a.m. The auction sale will also be held on Saturday, beginning at 9 a.m.

Consignment items will be accepted from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Thursday and Friday.

Community event

Health and safety is the topic for a free community event at the American Legion Post 927 in Gilbert from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, with a rain date of May 3.

The day offers live entertainment, home and personal safety, fire safety, children’s events and free demonstrations.

Chicken barbecue

Effort UMC will hold a chicken barbecue dinner in Wesley Hall from 3-6:30 p.m. Saturday. The dinner includes a half-chicken for adults (quarter-chicken for children), plus baked potato, corn, applesauce or coleslaw, roll and dessert.

Saturday program

The Ross Township Historical Society and the Eldred Township Historical Society are hosting author L’Aura Hldak-Hoffman’s presentation “Ghosts of the Poconos” from 1:30-3 p.m. Saturday in the Community Room of the Western Pocono Community Library on Pilgrim Way, Brodheadsville.

The author has been ghost-hunting for over 20 years and founded the New Jersey Ghost Hunters Society in 1998.

There is no admission for the event but donations are welcome.

Flea market set

The Effort Women’s Group is hosting a Spring Flea Market from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. May 3.

AA reminder

McMichaels Methodist hosts an AA meeting at the church every Wednesday at noon and Saturday evening at 6:30. There is no charge, and all meetings are confidential.

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, hosts an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting every Monday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Geisinger Mount Pocono is offering a free diabetic eye screening from 8 a.m.-noon Saturday at 126 Market Way in Mount Pocono.

Polk history

The Polk Township Historical Society will meet at the municipal building May 3. All citizens interested in local history are invited. Anyone with questions can call Norm Burger at 610-681-7561.

‘Pond Peeking’

Monroe County Conservation District’s Kettle Creek Environmental Education Center has extended an invitation to join staff at 10 a.m. May 3 for a “Pond Peeking” program.

The pond at Kettle Creek is full of critters that are a wonder to observe. In celebration of Amphibian Week, folks are invited from 10-11:30 a.m. as dip nets are used to explore the life in Swink Pond. Participants should be prepared to get muddy feet.

There is a cost per person. Kettle Creek is located at 8050 Running Valley Road, Stroudsburg, PA 18360. Preregistration is required; for more information, call 570-629-3061 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and some Saturdays from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

Quiet Valley

Quiet Valley, Monroe County’s living historical farm, continues some of its programs/activities year-round.

On Wednesday and Thursday, preschool is offered. The morning class is from 9:30-11 a.m.; the afternoon class is from 1-2:30 p.m.

This coming Tuesday, Quiet Valley is hosting a Homeschool Tour Day, and on May 4, the annual membership meeting and potluck meal will be held.

Current senior needs

The current wish list for all Monroe County Senior Centers includes: acrylic paints; adult coloring books; glue guns and glue sticks; holiday decorations; blank canvasses; and paperware and party goods.

Thinking summer?

Eldred Township will hold an improvement event for household hazardous waste collection, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. July 26 at 1114 Military Road, Stroudsburg.

Accepted will be: paints, but no latex; adhesives; fire extinguishers; lithium batteries, etc.
