Tamaqua Borough resumes street sweeping schedule

Street sweeping in Tamaqua will return to the regular schedule this week.

Residents are advised to keep an eye out for signs prohibiting parking on streets that will be cleaned by the sweeper.

“The streets will be posted a day in advance of sweeping,” said Tamaqua borough Manager Kevin Steigerwalt said. “Make sure you move your car because it could be towed.”

Steigerwalt said the sweeping began earlier this week on several streets.

“We do put the schedule online,” said Jay Stidham, the borough’s director of public works.

It can be found at www.tamaquaborough.com and on the borough’s Facebook page.

Stidham said beginning next week, the sweeper will resume its normal Thursday and Friday schedule in the downtown.

In keeping with the topic of streets, Councilman Jay Hollenbach Jr. asked Stidham about trees along Broad Street.

It was noted last year that contractors who completed the borough’s streetscape project several years ago unknowingly planted trees that have complex root systems.

The roots are lifting sidewalks, Hollenbach Jr. said.

“We had the forester in,” Stidham said. “He is supposed to get us options on new trees and said we can start taking down the older ones that are lifting the sidewalks.”

Stidham said the forester said the trees damaging sidewalks are “one of the hybrids that isn’t supposed to be there.”

“If we take them down, they’ll stop growing and making the sidewalks worse,” according to Stidham.

The forester advised that the roots will eventually decay and the sidewalks will settle back. The trees will be replaced.
